I ditched my job for growth

New Job

Around this time last year I accepted a job as a “marketing assistant” which was listed as a “graphics and content specialist” involving marketing design, web optimization, e-commerce promotion, and most importantly, social media marketing. I accepted the job over a lower paying offer at a real estate agency. Know your worth

The actual offer letter was for 15k more than I had asked so I didn't negotiate. I definitely underestimated myself after one of my previous jobs doubted me and threw off my self worth (corporate wise) for a bit. I accepted the offer without negotiation and moved to a new town (risky-ish idea but my old lease was ending). 3 Supervisors in 1 year In the first month I enjoyed the job under supervisor 1 and was doing casual social media promotions, minor website edits, etc., but was most excited for working with an upcoming e-commerce website that never launched, making my role feel less important and I was filling in for others and/or waiting for relevant assignments. After supervisor 1 left along with the initial plans, I had a short lived supervisor 2, then a newly appointed supervisor 3 who had a new way to implement me after company visions changed. When I wasn't filling in for another role I made social media/digital marketing plans for business partners. It was fun because all of the partners were major names, but I wasn't involved in the execution of the plans, just the creation, and when there were no collaborations I was bored. Challenges are good I decided that although the pay was decent, I wasn't gaining relevant new skills or feeling challenged. I felt that if I left I'd get all that plus promotions (financial & title wise) much faster. I also felt bored with extra time, not to mention, my average coworker was 15+ years older than me so the culture felt off. Moral of the story is that making quick easy money is only good in the moment. Eventually challenged workers can get promoted surpass you! I started looking elsewhere & took a vacation I started applying for other jobs related to social media and digital marketing. I got callbacks from a few, interviewed for one, and was feeling confident so I then used 3 vacation days and drove off to Asheville for a trip in the mountains. South Carolinian companies do not have to and often don't cash out unused vacation days. I actually left with 7 unused but didn't want to go overboard (don't burn bridges!). On vacation I got a follow up phone interview from the job I would later accept due to room for upward movement & more responsibilities. 3 weeks notice I got home to a decent offer letter that I accepted without negotiation besides asking for 3 weeks notice before I started, then I politely told my old boss I needed to leave due to the changing of my role/company goals and for growth opportunities. However, I did offer to strictly do the social media part of the job in my free time as a contractor and had to negotiate after seeing the offer...

*STAY TUNED FOR DETAILS ON NEGOTIATIONS, HOW I QUIT, INTERVIEW, APPLYING WHILE IN A FULL TIME JOB, & MORE!
